Bosch Rotary hammer

A rotary hammer, also known as a rotary hammer drill, is a powerful and versatile tool designed for heavy-duty drilling and demolition tasks. While it shares some similarities with a standard hammer drill, a rotary hammer is far more robust and efficient, especially when working with hard materials.

How it Works

The key difference lies in its hammering mechanism. Unlike a hammer drill that uses a clutch to generate rapid, small impacts, a rotary hammer uses an electro-pneumatic piston system.

  1. Motor and Crank: An electric motor turns a crank.
  2. Piston Action: This crank moves a drive piston back and forth within a cylinder.
  3. Compressed Air: The drive piston does not directly touch the “flying piston.” Instead, the rapid back-and-forth motion compresses a pocket of air between the two.
  4. Powerful Blow: This compressed air forcefully pushes the flying piston forward, which in turn strikes the end of the drill bit. This process generates a much more powerful and efficient hammer blow (measured in Joules) than a standard hammer drill.
