Broken Screw extractor with handle

Original price was: KSh 1,000.00.Current price is: KSh 750.00.

If you have a broken screw extractor lodged in a screw, here’s a breakdown of methods, starting from less aggressive to more specialized, that you might consider.

Understanding the Challenge:

  • Hardness: Extractor bits are harder than regular drill bits and even many hardened screws. This means standard HSS (High-Speed Steel) drill bits will just skate over them or dull instantly.
  • Brittle: They are brittle, meaning they can shatter further if subjected to impact or side loads, making the problem worse.
  • Reverse Thread: The broken piece is often stuck with its reverse threads engaged, making it want to turn even tighter if you try to turn it the wrong way.

Methods to Remove a Broken Screw Extractor:

1. The “Hammer and Chisel” (Careful!) Method: * Concept: Since the extractor is brittle, you might be able to shatter it into smaller, manageable pieces that can be picked out. * Tools: Small, sharp chisel (or a punch with a very fine point), small hammer, safety glasses (CRITICAL!), needle-nose pliers or tweezers. * Process: 1. Put on safety glasses. 2. Position the tip of the chisel on an edge or flute of the broken extractor. 3. Angle the chisel slightly so that a tap with the hammer would apply a clockwise (tightening) force to the extractor, trying to break it. You’re not trying to loosen it, but to chip it. 4. Gently tap the chisel with the hammer. You’re aiming to shatter small pieces. 5. Carefully remove any broken fragments with pliers or tweezers. 6. Repeat this process, working around the extractor, trying to break it down. * Caveat: This requires a delicate touch. Too much force can damage the surrounding material or further embed the extractor.

2. Carbide Drill Bits: * Concept: Standard HSS bits won’t work. You need something harder. Carbide drill bits are significantly harder and can cut through hardened steel. * Tools: Solid carbide drill bits (not just carbide-tipped), a sturdy drill press or a high-quality hand drill with a very stable setup, cutting oil, safety glasses. * Process: 1. Mark the center of the broken extractor as precisely as possible. 2. Use a drill press if possible for maximum stability and downward pressure. If using a hand drill, ensure it’s held perfectly straight and steady. 3. Start with a small carbide bit and use slow speed and moderate, consistent pressure. 4. Apply cutting oil to keep the bit cool and aid cutting. 5. Gradually increase drill bit size until you’ve drilled out enough of the extractor. 6. Once the extractor is drilled out, you’ll be left with a hole. You might then need to drill the original screw out completely or use a helicoil/Time-Sert to repair the threads if they are damaged.
